A GOOD LENT

There are many ways of making a good Lent. The Church encourages all the faithful to give more time and attention to prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  Today I want to say a few words on prayer.

There are many lovely prayers including saying the Rosary, the Angelus, the morning and evening offering, prayers before and after meals etc. Reading the bible slowly and pondering its words is another popular way to pray.  During Lent, lots of people find time to pray the Stations of the Cross.  All of these are excellent prayers.

Prayer is the language we use to express our love of God.  We talk to God as to a close friend who cares deeply for us.  We can share our deepest feelings and secrets and know they will be cherished by our good and loving God.  As in all deep relationships, so too in prayer there are times when language fails us and we relax into peaceful silence.  We are just happy to be in God’s company, knowing that his love is filling our hearts and surrounding us with his care and protection.

This Lent, I recommend that you find a quiet place and take some time simply to sit with God and allow his love to fill your heart and mind.  As you breathe in and out, remember that God is breathing you into life with every breath.  God can’t stop loving you and wants you to know in a deeply personal and intimate way the depth of his love.

Prayer is the special time when we become more aware of God’s presence and action in our lives and respond with joyful gratitude.  You can experience the loving presence of God in every breath you take, in every beat of your heart, in every step you walk.

“Help me Lord to be more aware of your intimate presence and love. Amen.”

THE SEASON OF LENT

Lent is a time of personal renewal.  We are invited to look at our lives and to take stock: what is going well and what needs attention and adjustment?   The Church offers us useful helps: in the readings from scripture at Mass each day, in encouraging us to devote more time to personal prayer, to make some sacrifice as a sign of repentance and sorrow for sin, and to be more aware of people who are suffering and in need and to help them in some practical way. This is summed up as Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving.

St. Joseph’s will help you with your Lenten journey.  This is most evident in the Lenten Project that gives each one of us the opportunity to help people who are suffering and in need. This year we have chosen to help the suffering victims of the terrible earthquake that rocked Turkey and North West  Syria on February 6 last.  We often feel helpless when confronted with such catastrophic tragedies and don’t know how to respond.  Through the Lenten Project each one of us has the chance to do something practical and useful to alleviate some of the suffering.  Through l’Oeuvre d’Orient our contributions will reach people who need food, clothes, tents and other forms of shelter. Our contributions combined with those of others will make a real difference to the lives of many people.

We will also provide an opportunity for you to pray the Stations of the Cross every Friday evening after the 7.30 pm Mass.  This form of prayer is a wonderful way of uniting ourselves with Jesus in his last hours as he willingly laid down his life for love of us.  We can grow in love of Jesus and learn from him how to give ourselves for the good of others.

We are also encouraged to fast a little every Friday during Lent by abstaining from meat and making some other little sacrifices.

We wish you all a very fruitful Lent.

THIS YEAR’S LENTEN PROJECT: TURKEY AND SYRIA

As I write, tens of thousands of people in Turkey and Syria continue to struggle for survival in the aftermath of the massive earthquake that rocked both countries.  Millions of people have been displaced, many have no shelter and are without food and water.  The death toll has already surpassed 38,000 and the fear is that this number could double.

By the time the earthquake struck last Monday we had not yet agreed on a Lenten project.  The Teen Ministry Group met on Saturday last and proposed that this year’s Lenten Project should be for the victims of the earthquake. The Pastoral Council agreed.  There are no Passionists working in Turkey or Syria but we will link up with the charity l’Oeuvre d’Orient to distribute what we manage to collect during Lent.

The situation of the people could hardly be worse. In Syria in particular, after years of terrible civil war people now face new levels of suffering and near despair.  I urge everyone to be generous in sharing whatever you can afford in order to give some relief to the unimaginable suffering of these brothers and sisters of ours.
