MARDI GRAS

The celebration of Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) has a long history. It refers to the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and is associated with preparation for the rigors of the penitential season of Lent.  Mardi Gras was part of the annual Carnivale or “farewell to meat” which refers to the forty days of fasting from meat during Lent.  The people of God celebrated life and thanked God for his many gifts before sharing Jesus’ 40 days of fasting before the great festival of Easter.

The Church places a lot of importance on the need for penance and self-denial as an expression of repentance for sins and the desire to give oneself to God. However, there is more to the Christian life than penance and Christians are told to rejoice and celebrate the joy of the Good News and the wonderful gift of salvation. Carnival was the time when the Church blessed the people and their joyful celebration of life always keeping in mind that God is the origin of all good things and the source of our joy.

We will celebrate Mardi Gras in this parish on the evening of Saturday February 18.  Everyone is welcome!

THE CHURCH AS LEAVEN

The Catholic Church has existed in many different forms throughout its long history.  The early Church was little more than a collection of small groups, meeting in private houses, scattered unevenly all over the empire.

At the same time, these were dynamic communities, filled with the presence and action of the Holy Spirit who shared gifts with all the members for the good of the whole community.  Charity, service, and worship were the heart of their life.  Everyone was included and invited to participate as a brother and sister.  The focus of the community was to share the joy of knowing Jesus with the wider society. These small Churches had no official role or status in society but lived secretly and worked quietly as the leaven transforming the society from within.   The fruits were many.

After the conversion of the emperor Constantine, the Church had a new status and role and soon took on the appearance and trappings of the Empire.   It has not been easy for the Church to combine the poverty and simplicity of Jesus the innocent victim of imperial power with the majesty, pomp and splendor of the Empire.

Today we are invited to remember Jesus who was crucified by imperial power and to live our Christian discipleship more like the leaven than the Empire.

 A SYNODAL PARISH

I would like 2023 to be a Synodal Year for St. Joseph’s parish when we unite with the whole Church and set out on the Synodal path proposed by Pope Francis.

Pope Francis says that the way of Synodality is about walking together with our brothers and sisters and in the company of the Lord Jesus.  It is the way to forge a new humanity.  It starts locally and small but it aspires to embrace all people who share this planet with us and who have been created in the image and likeness of God.

The Synodal Path begins here in the local Church where we already share faith and work closely together to deepen our Christian commitment.  That must continue.  But we are asked to go a step further along the road to unity.  We are to reach out to others, to other parishes, to other language groups, other Christian denominations, other religions, to all people of good will. We have to find the ways of doing this that are appropriate to our particular circumstances.

The idea of Synodality is based on the firm conviction that God has blessed each one with gifts and talents for the common good.  We are to pool these gifts and build up one another.  We are to tap into the unharnessed energies of creativity, service, and love that are here in this small local Church.  We have been given these gifts for the sake of others.  Synodality is the call to walk together, to talk together, to plan together and to act together for the good of all.  Let’s give it a try and hope that in this way we will grow in faith, hope and love.
