A GOOD LENT

There are many ways of making a good Lent. The Church encourages all the faithful to give more time and attention to prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  Today I want to say a few words on prayer.

There are many lovely prayers including saying the Rosary, the Angelus, the morning and evening offering, prayers before and after meals etc. Reading the bible slowly and pondering its words is another popular way to pray.  During Lent, lots of people find time to pray the Stations of the Cross.  All of these are excellent prayers.

Prayer is the language we use to express our love of God.  We talk to God as to a close friend who cares deeply for us.  We can share our deepest feelings and secrets and know they will be cherished by our good and loving God.  As in all deep relationships, so too in prayer there are times when language fails us and we relax into peaceful silence.  We are just happy to be in God’s company, knowing that his love is filling our hearts and surrounding us with his care and protection.

This Lent, I recommend that you find a quiet place and take some time simply to sit with God and allow his love to fill your heart and mind.  As you breathe in and out, remember that God is breathing you into life with every breath.  God can’t stop loving you and wants you to know in a deeply personal and intimate way the depth of his love.

Prayer is the special time when we become more aware of God’s presence and action in our lives and respond with joyful gratitude.  You can experience the loving presence of God in every breath you take, in every beat of your heart, in every step you walk.

“Help me Lord to be more aware of your intimate presence and love. Amen.”
