PARADISE REGAINED

During Advent we are reminded that salvation embraces the whole creation.  Christianity is not about the salvation of “immortal souls” but about God’s promise to remake the whole creation so that humans, animals, and the whole of nature will experience a new way of being and a new bond of intimacy with God. “The calf and the young lion will graze together, with a little boy to lead them” (Is. 11, 6).

The New Creation will embrace every created thing and all will be remade so as to manifest the glory and beauty of God.

The original paradise in Eden was a place of harmony between God and humanity, and between humanity and all the animals. The divisions and conflicts that affect the whole of nature are a consequence of sin.  Salvation will restore the lost harmony and create a new paradise when all creation will be at peace with itself and with God,  “The whole creation is longing to share the glorious freedom of the children of God” (Rom. 8. 19-21).

As part of our Advent preparations we can renew our commitment to care for the earth and recognise that our ultimate destiny and that of our world are intimately entwined.
