Reflection for this weekend.
We never know when we awake what the day ahead will bring. Some turn out to be like many others. A life-changing day comes in the life of Zacchaeus. What happened that day? Jesus came to visit at his home and eat with him.

Zacchaeus, a senior tax collector, was rich. He was not popular as is seen when Jesus went to eat in his home. He was not tall. In fact, he needed to climb a tree to even catch a glimpse of Jesus as He passed along the road.

Zacchaeus was keen to see Jesus. What he did not know – and I often forget – Jesus was keener to see him.

Jesus reaches the spot where Zacchaeus was up the tree. Jesus looks up and calls, ‘Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I must stay at your house today.’

From being a distant hidden person, Zacchaeus looks straight at the face of Jesus. This is a moment that would change his life until the day he died.

Zacchaeus needed to pinch himself to see if this was real or was he dreaming. But this was a most real moment in his life. Outside there was grumbling and complaints that Jesus, who should have known better, had ‘gone to stay at a sinner’s house.’

But Zacchaeus’ heart melts in the presence of the pure holiness of Jesus. He not only promises to change his life but ‘to give HALF my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay them back FOUR times the amount.’ That is a profound conversion.

He has less in his ‘bank account,’ but Zaccheus is richer than before he met Jesus. He is claimed back from sin to grace, from death to fulness of life. That is what happens when Jesus finds us and changes our lives.

Come, Lord Jesus and change me as you did Zacchaeus. Let me follow in your footsteps. At Mass, your invite me to your table to sit with you and sisters and brothers. With them and You, Jesus, change my life to loving.”  [Aidan]
