MISSION SUNDAY

“As the Father sent me so am I sending you.  Receive the Holy Spirit” (John, 20. 21-22).

Today we want to express our solidarity and support for all the men and women who have left family and homeland to bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth.  At the same time, we ask for God’s help to rededicate ourselves to the mission we all received in baptism to be witnesses to Christ in our words and deeds.

God sent his son Jesus as a missionary into the world to proclaim the Good News and to establish the Kingdom of God.  The four Gospels are the inspired account of how Jesus fulfilled the mission he received from the Father.  After his death and resurrection, Jesus in turn sent his disciples into the world to continue his mission and to share the Good News with all the people of the earth.

Here in St. Joseph’s we rejoice that we have heard the Good News and have been called to follow Jesus as his disciples.  An essential part of our following is to spread the Good News wherever we are and in whatever manner we can.  The Gospel is not just a verbal message but it is the power of God’s love active among us changing people and changing the world. Our mission is to love.

As we know from the daily news and from our own experience of life, the world is still in great need.  There is still so much greed, hatred and violence and people everywhere need love, understanding, forgiveness and hope. Jesus has shared his mission with us and sends us out into the world.  Today we ask for the help of God to be witnesses to Jesus and the new life he brought us.
