Reflection on the Scriptures:

The Scriptures today remind us that we   are God’s stewards – of Creation, of His People and of His Kingdom here on earth. The mistake can be made of thinking that any or all of these are ours to “own,” to “use” or “trade” to our own personal advantage.

The Opening Prayer of the Mass gives a stark reminder that all Law of God is founded “upon love of you and our neighbour.” When we meet God this will be the only issue to be raised with us. There will be no trick questions. The map of our lives will be the only evidence we can offer.

The Gospel reminds that we will be asked to “draw up an account of your stewardship.” This will be different from a Bank Statement and can only be written from all that is in my life.

Among the items will be:

  • Am I trustworthy with God’s riches that I have received?
  • Am I honest with myself, God and all others?
  • Am I a slave of 2 masters?
  • Am filled with hatred or love?
  • Am I respectful of others?
  • Am I God’s servant or not?

Key to dealing with such questions is to realise that God wants us all to be saved and to love Him with all our hearts and each other in the same way. It’s a huge challenge in the real world in which we live and where Jesus walks with us at every moment.

Permit me to address a few words to you as we prepare for a wonderful time of change that is soon to happen at St Joseph’s. At the beginning of October, Martin Coffey, C.P. will begin to “carry the flame” with you that has burned on this site since 1869.

St Paul today advises that “prayers should be offered for kings and others in authority,” adding that “to do this is right and will please God our Saviour.” That is a blessing you can confer on Martin as he comes to you. Over the past fourteen years, as a servant at St Jospeh’s, my call was to love of God and you as best I could. For my many failures, I ask  your forgiveness.

Over my lifetime, I have tried to live by the words of the Gospel for the first Sunday of Oct: “Must we be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you, when you have done all you have been told to do, say, ‘We are merely servants; we have done no more than our duty’” [Luke 17:10]

There is no need to be grateful to a servant like me “for doing what I was told.” It is a privilege that few priests have experienced. You are thanked and saluted by me. It is an unmerited gift of God that you allowed me to be with you on your journey of faith.

I have shared in your joys and your sorrows. I tried to stand among you when things were good, and the wind was in our backs. In challenging days, when we faced storms together, I tried not to let you down. My thanks to each of you and remember a prayer for me.
