LETTER from the Archbishop of Paris:

Dear brothers and sisters, dear friends,
As you know we were waiting for the CIASE report* which was made public today. We asked for it in order to tell the truth because we absolutely owed it to the victims and to all the faithful.

I was meditating on this this morning with the psalm of the Mass Ps 129: "From the depths I cry out to you Lord".

We have discovered this truth with all of you. She is way beyond what we thought we knew, she is scary.

For several years, we have taken measures to take this appalling tragedy seriously, but we see that we still have a long way to go to welcome the suffering of the victims, support them in their reconstruction, and make the common home more secure. The analysis of the causes exposed by the report of Mr. Sauvé obliges us to look closely at the factors which allowed such abuses. We will need all of you to enlighten us and help us with the necessary reforms. We asked CIASE to give us recommendations. We will study them carefully with all the bishops of France in order to decide what is appropriate to implement.

Believe me, I share your deep sadness at these terrible revelations. I invite you to pray for the victims whose lives are shattered. I also ask you to pray for all priests, deacons and laity so that they continue to work with dedication. We are all deeply saddened by these revelations.

Dear brothers and sisters, dear friends, I assure you of my deep communion in Christ.

+Michel Aupetit
Archbishop of Paris
