Pastoral Letter 3 September from Archbishop Aupetit
This letter to all people of the Diocese is available on the Diocesan Website:
www.paris.catholique.fr

He recalls the fire at Cathedral of Notre Dame on 15th April 2019. The next year the world was plunged into a pandemic with the disruption that it has brought. The church, as we know, is not immune from events around us.
This is the context in which Jesus calls on us to reflect on the Mission of the Archdiocese of Paris. (We over 6  ‘Conversations’ reflected on mission at St Joseph’s in this changing world.)

Mgr. Aupetit presents two pastoral visions in this discernment which are:

  1. Develop places of missionary community among us and
  2. Offer unconditional welcome to all people.

These are closely linked. In his letter of 4 pages (A4), Mgr. Aupetit sets out a vision for Paris and the Church that will need prayer, listening to each other and planning.
He concludes his letter to us with some challenging words:

“We must be able to launch new and sometimes surprising initiatives to respond to the challenges before us.”

Preparatory Document Synod of Bishops published 7th Sept., a call by Pope Francis to ‘this path of Synodality which God expects of the Church of the Third Millenium’. It reminds me of reading documents of Vatican II nearly 60 years ago. It will enrich us to give this our attention.
Next week in the Bulletin, I will try to give a flavour of its contents and how it might be a guide for St Joseph’s Church.
